Freaking Out Moment #394938132

I just had one of those panicky, “omg, how am I going to promote this thing once it’s done” moments. Edits are coming along faster than I thought they would, and I think I’m going to be finished in just about two weeks. (Maybe sooner). Which means I STILL need to nail down formatting for the print AND ebook version, WITHOUT having microsoft word. Which is a huge pain in the ass, because I don’t have an extra $140 to buy it, and Open Office only does so much.

So that’s mildly annoying. I hope I’m smart enough to figure it all out. =\

“how i do dis?!”

And then we’re back to the whole “omg how do I promote this crap” after it’s out. I’d like to do a blog tour, but those are often paid for and I don’t have enough money right now to PAY for one, so I guess I’ll have to whore myself out and see what comes of it.

Can you really do anything but seek out reviews/interviews/post to your page/blog/twitter every day? I feel like there’s something big I’m missing. Obviously, like with any writer, you wanna get the absolute maximum exposure you can get, but as I’ve never done this before, I’m 98% clueless about most of this stuff.

I have this sneaking suspicion that I’m going to get a handful of sales when it comes out (you know, pity sales from fam and friends mostly), and then it’ll abruptly halt, lol. I’m thinking I’m going to enroll in KDP select and try to strategically use my free days to boost rank or something. But then, of course, that helps a lot when you have some people spouting “hey, this book is free today!” for you. Hmm.

I thought about a giveaway, but I don’t think anyone wants stuff from my book yet, ha. I can make a poster of the book cover, and sign it, and have some printed copies signed, but I’m not 100% sure anyone would want it from an unknown. Apparently I can also make an iPhone case with my cover on it (which is totally cool), but again, it’d be a waste if 4 people signed up for the giveaway, lol. Maybe after a few more books and a few hundred more FB page likes, or something.

Does anybody have some step by step advice for this? Maybe a site, or a list of stuff I can do?

Ah well. I’ll figure it out. @_@

Marketing is nuts.

Or maybe it’s more like networking. I’ve spent a good hour ‘liking’ facebook pages in exchange for likes on my own page. Which is perfectly fine, of course, and fair. It’s just time consuming.

I’ve heard from a lot of authors that they spend a ton of time marketing and networking, and I believe it now! Phew! I have so much more work to do, but it’s a start. I’m hoping I’ll be set up with an audience come launch time (which is fast approaching as I’m going to go into overdrive and try and finish Redhaven draft #1 this week).

Alot of my networking attention has been on Facebook so far, because twitter kind of perpetuates itself. Just go on a follow spree, @ some people, retweet and play nice, and you’re all good. Facebook ends up with a lot of spam.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my fellow writers. I just dont like them pushing my longtime friends under all thier posts. I know thats what they have to do, but…  still. If you’ve found out I’ve hidden you, don’t be offended! So far it hasn’t been too bad.

ALSO – WTF! I go on my liking spree, c&p’ing the thingy I was supposed to, and then facebook is like “you do dis too much! tori. stahp. tori shahp! I temp ban you!” Wtf, facebook. I’m not a spammer. :I

But I’m gonna eat now and go to bed, and start super-writing tomorrow morning! HEE-YA!

Kicking myself in the butt.

Or, I need to anyway. I’ve been very lazy about my word count today. Granted, I also had a final exam, but… who cares about final exams when there’s books to write? (Thats not true. I care. But still.)

I think it’s because I’m still in the early stages of this whole writing thing. I need a personal trainer, but for writing. Someone to punch me in the ass when I started floating over to Pinterest for my books board, or looking at the Facebook page for it. I dunno. Maybe I have natural lazyness? Am I afraid? Probably. I think I’m just the kind of person who needs absolute peace and quiet to really churn out the good stuff.

But I do like my book so far. I’m having these weird moments where it sort of just writes itself. Some random cool idea will wiggle its way in without me even trying. It’s very cool. Ask me about the Tank sometime. Bloop.

In other news, I’m still distracted. There’s a lot of ‘promotional’ stuff to do. Facebook pages, and vlogs (if I ever get up the courage), and a Pinterest board, and a whole bunch of other junk. I think I may be getting ahead of myself, though. This is the kind of thing you should be focusing on -after- a book is finished, not before. I think I’m just too excited for myself, or something.

I think I will keep up with this blog, just for the sake of documenting my progress and my ups and downs and stuff, but I dont think I’m going to do anything majorly besides that. I did some napkin math type planning, and if I stick to around 3k to 4k words a day, I should be able to finish the first draft in about a month. Perphaps. That’s the plan anyway.

I really hope I can do this. I know I can do this, but I really hope I actually do this.
